Child support: A way to provide for your child in another home

Child support is an important financial arrangement that requires one parent to pay the other a preset amount of money each month (or based on another scheduled time or date) for the care of their children. Child support may seem unfair to some people, especially when they share custody regularly, but it's important to remember why support is so necessary.

Child support provides for children who live with the other parent more often. Support is required because it's supposed to make the home "whole," giving your child the full financial support of both parents in their primary household.

There is no question that some people misuse child support, but the number of cases where that happens is minimal compared to those who truly need it to raise their children.

What can child support be used for?

If you are worried about how the support you pay will be used, remember that it can be used for almost anything. Child support may be used for:

  • Food
  • Clothing
  • Shelter
  • Educational purposes
  • Extracurricular activities
  • Shopping trips
  • College funds
  • And much more.

If you do believe that the support you're paying is being misused, you should do what you can to collect evidence and seek a modification with the court. You may be able to seek greater custody rights or ask for a modification in support to reduce the amount of support that is being misused by the other parent.

At the end of the day, the support you pay is for your child's benefit. As long as they are benefiting from it in some way, it's likely being used correctly.
